Nose shapes: what type of nose do you have?

Aesthetically, the center of the face is very important for harmonizing facial features. This is why, to a large extent, people’s faces depend on the shapes of their noses.

Of course, beyond that, your nose allows you to breathe, perceive odors and support your glasses. In this article, we will focus specifically on the shapes of the nose. Do you know what type you have?

Nose shapes: what nose do you have?

Like the rest of the facial features, each person’s nose is different and has unique characteristics. For this reason, we can say that, although all noses are different, they always harmonize the face.

The anatomical design of the nose is basic: the nostrils or nasal cavities through which air passes, two nasal fins that cover these cavities, the septum and the tip. These, in turn, are the elements that determine the types of nose shapes.

However, there can be many differences between one nose and another. The appearance of the nose varies depending on the shape of the bridge, the height, width and opening of the nasal cavities, among other aspects. This makes it possible to classify the noses into large groups, depending on their general shape.

Nose shapes in men
The shapes of the nose are related to the geographical ancestry and the mixture of populations around the world.

A flat nose is characterized by a short submerged bridge. The nostrils are extended laterally. The tip is also flat. It bears this name because it has a sunken or flattened appearance on the side. In other words, the nasal bridge does not stand out too much.

The flat nose is common in populations with yellow and black skin tones. In Asians, it is less wide than in people with African characteristics.

Unlike the previous one, this type of nose has a prominent tip. The septum is usually straight, although it curves slightly towards the end. Therefore, the nasal cavities appear to move forward.

This type of nose is common in people in northern Europe. However, it predominates in other population groups. This type of nose has resulted from an adaptation that allows people to breathe better cold air.

From the side, the upturned noses look sharp, like those of cartoon characters. It is one of the most requested forms of the nose in rhinoplasty. However, we must emphasize that not all faces harmonize in the same way.

The distinguishing feature of a wide nose is a constant enlargement from the septum to the tip. Famous basketball player Lebron James has this type of nose shape.

The nasal fins are dilated, as are the nasal cavities. The wide nose is also called the Nubian nose, because it is common to ethnic African Americans, East Asians, and Hispanics. It is also common in other populations in North Africa, including Sudan.

An aquiline nose has a high, long and prominent bridge. The septum curves inward at the tip. This is why it is also known as meat nose, because it resembles the beak of a bird. This aspect is most noticeable from the side.

It is characteristic of certain ethnic groups in southern Europe (Spain, Italy, France and Portugal). It is also common among Arabs and regions that were once occupied by them in the past, as well as among Slavic peoples.

A Greek nose is balanced. The bridge is straight, the septum barely stands out, and the nostrils are small. Thus, the nasal fins do not expand too much. It is the perfect complement to the so-called Greek profile.

You can see this type of nose shape in classical Greek-Latin paintings and sculptures. This type of nose shape predominates, although not exclusively, in European countries in the Mediterranean basin.

As the name suggests, this nose looks like a light bulb. It has a round, wide nasal tip. In fact, the nasal fins do not stand out so much.

Of course, the rounded or ball-shaped tip is noticeable, as well as the enlargement of the part that surrounds the nasal cavities. This type of nose shape is common in people with black skin, people of African descent and mixed-race Americans.

A small nose looks upside down. It is much shorter at the bridge and sept. It can be rounded at the base. It is also not very wide and has small wings and nasal cavities.

The distance from the arch of the eyebrows to under the nostrils is short compared to other types of noses. This is why it looks so small on a person’s face.

This nose occupies a large part of a person’s face. It can be proportionate, aquiline or with large nasal fins, with a rounded or bulbous tip.

This type of nose stands out from the side, but also from the front. The famous literary character Cyrano de Bergerac is an emblematic case of a person with a big and prominent nose.

This type of nose does not predominate in a certain population group. However, it is less common among Asians and Northern Europeans.

Some people’s noses may be somewhat uneven. One side is different from the other. It can also look like an S-shaped curve, seen from the front. Inequality or asymmetry can be caused by trauma.

Actor Owen Wilson has this type of nose.

Nose shapes: variations

The nose is the part of the face that attracts the most attention. Each shape of the nose is different and very personal. However, not everyone is happy with the nose with which they were born. This is why many people consider that resorting to rhinoplasty is an option to improve or change the shape of the nose. However, the need for a surgical procedure also arises due to a health problem, such as septal deviation or congenital malformations.

In general, the shape of the nose reflects many things (for example, our ancestors, culture and geographical location). In fact, the shape of the nose can also tell us who we are and where we come from.
